Robert Whittaker beats Yoel Romero in fight of the year contender
Robert Whittaker has beaten Yoel Romero in one of the fights of the year at UFC 225 in Chicago.
The Aussie middleweight champion earned a split decision victory with scores of 48-47, 48-47, 47-48.
Whittaker broke his right hand in the first round of the fight and was floored by Romero several times.
Romero, who missed weight by two ounces, wasn’t eligible to win the middleweight belt if he had won.
Romero is the only fighter in UFC history to miss weight in two title fights.
Whittaker now owns two decision wins over the Cuban veteran Romero after their UFC 213 fight last year.
